The phrase, “back alley” was originated from “slum”. The back allies in Singapore are far from its original meaning. It is where the back doors of houses are located, a place where housewives chitchat, restaurant and office workers have a smoke break, elderlies play chess and cats game hide and seek. In a metropolitan city, front streets are infinite masquerades charming the world with its artificial glamour, speed and complexity. Back allies, on the other hand, are the true essence of the city: at some corners, one is able to rest his body and soul; at others, dreams and desires thrive. The back allies in my paintings are magical and surreal, intending to take viewers away from the hectic facade of daily chores.
